Charlotte Is An Ally!
by Jon Schwenzer - Florida Blade | January 24, 2009
I am perplexed by a recent letter you ran from a reader that takes issue with the article you published that describes Charlotte Rodstrom as an "ally" to the gay community (“Is Rodstrom an ally?”, SFB Jan. 8). The record clearly indicates that Mrs. Rodstrom has in fact been a staunch supporter of LGBT issues and has been effective as a City Commissioner in this regard. To unjustly attack such a candidate is neither fair nor helpful in forging political alliances.

Two gay men are running against her in the upcoming election. "Identity politics" may dictate that gays should vote for gays, blacks should vote for blacks, women should vote for women, etc.

This philosophy is shortsighted and has been discredited by the tactics of the GOP in the Presidential Election. The cynical selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate as a ploy to lure disappointed female Hillary voters backfired, and rightly so.

Charlotte Rodstrom has been an excellent commissioner and has proven her ability to help our local institutions such as the GLCC and Stonewall Library and has demonstrated her steadfast support of AIDS fundraising.

Merely "being a gay man" is not qualification enough to gain my vote. Gay voters are often better served by officials with a proven track record of solidarity with our community. Fortunately, a substantial number of my gay neighbors in District 2 recognize the great work Charlotte has done on our behalf and earned our votes.
